Maternity Emergency
-
1Call 112 immediately. Tell them your exact location and
that someone is not breathing.
-
2Check if the person is responsive β tap their shoulders
firmly and shout "Are you okay?"
-
3If unresponsive and not breathing normally, begin CPR:
place the heel of your hand on the centre of their chest
and press down hard and fast β 30 compressions at a rate
of 100β120 per minute.
-
4After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths if trained
to do so. If not trained, continue chest compressions
only.
-
5Do not stop until emergency services arrive or an AED
(defibrillator) is available.
β οΈ Do not tilt the head back or attempt rescue breaths if you
suspect a neck or spine injury.
-
1Ask "Are you choking?" If they can cough, encourage them
to keep coughing.
-
2If they cannot cough, speak, or breathe, stand behind
them and give 5 firm back blows between the shoulder
blades with the heel of your hand.
-
3If back blows don't work, give 5 abdominal thrusts
(Heimlich manoeuvre): stand behind, wrap your arms around
their waist, make a fist just above the navel and thrust
inward and upward.
-
4Alternate 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts until the
object is dislodged or they lose consciousness.
-
5If they lose consciousness, call 112 immediately and
begin CPR.
β οΈ Do not perform abdominal thrusts on pregnant women or
infants under 1 year old β use back blows only.
-
1Call 112 immediately for life-threatening bleeding.
-
2Apply direct, firm pressure to the wound using a clean
cloth, clothing, or bandage. Do not remove the material β
add more on top if blood soaks through.
-
3Elevate the injured limb above the level of the heart if
possible.
-
4If bleeding is from a limb and does not stop, a
tourniquet can be applied 5β7cm above the wound. Note the
exact time it was applied.
-
5Keep the person warm, calm, and as still as possible. Lie
them down to reduce blood pressure.
β οΈ Do not remove any embedded object from a wound β stabilise
it in place and apply pressure around it.
-
1Remove the person from the source of the burn. For
electrical burns, do not touch them until the power is
off.
-
2Cool the burn immediately: run cool (not cold) water over
it for at least 20 minutes. Do not use ice, butter,
toothpaste, or any home remedy.
-
3Remove jewellery, watches, or tight clothing near the
burn area β but do not remove anything stuck to the
skin.
-
4Cover loosely with cling film or a clean, non-fluffy
material. Do not use cotton wool or adhesive bandages
directly on the burn.
-
5Seek medical attention for any burn larger than the size
of the person's hand, burns on the face, hands, feet,
genitals, or joints, and all burns in children.
β οΈ For chemical burns, brush off dry chemicals first, then run
water for 20+ minutes. Call 112 for large or chemical burns.
-
FFace drooping β Ask them to smile. Is
one side drooping or numb?
-
AArm weakness β Ask them to raise both
arms. Does one arm drift downward?
-
SSpeech difficulty β Ask them to repeat a
simple sentence. Is their speech slurred or strange?
-
TTime to call 112 β If you see ANY of
these signs, call 112 immediately. Note the time symptoms
first appeared.
-
+Keep them still, calm and comfortable. Do not give food
or water. If they are unconscious, place them in the
recovery position.
β
Every minute matters in a stroke. Getting to A&E within 3
hours significantly improves outcomes. The nearest 24-hour A&E
is UUTH Uyo β call 0803 359 7921.
-
1Stay calm and note the time the seizure starts.
-
2Clear the area around them of anything hard or sharp.
Cushion their head with something soft.
-
3Do NOT hold them down, restrain them, or put anything in
their mouth.
-
4After the jerking stops, place them in the recovery
position (on their side) to keep the airway clear.
-
5Call 112 if: the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes,
another seizure follows immediately, they do not regain
consciousness, they are injured, or it is their first
seizure.
β οΈ Never put your fingers or any object in the mouth of a
person having a seizure. You will be bitten and it will not
prevent choking.

If someone is in immediate danger of harming themselves
Do not leave them alone. Call 112 immediately and tell the operator it
is a mental health emergency. Stay calm and speak to them in a gentle,
non-judgmental way. Do not challenge, argue, or minimise what they are
feeling. Remove any means of self-harm from the immediate environment
where safe to do so. Your role is to keep them safe until help arrives
β you do not need to solve the problem.
NAFDAC Poison Control Centre
Nigeria's national poison control resource. Call immediately for
drug overdose, chemical ingestion, snake bite, pesticide exposure,
or any suspected poisoning. Have the container or substance name
ready if possible.
π
Drug Overdose
Call poison control immediately. Do not induce vomiting unless
specifically instructed. Keep the person awake and breathing. If
unconscious, place in recovery position. Bring the medication
bottle to hospital.
β οΈ Do not give food, water, or milk unless instructed by poison
control.
π
Snake Bite
Keep the person still and calm β movement accelerates venom
spread. Remove jewellery near the bite. Keep the bitten limb below
heart level. Go to hospital immediately. Try to note the snake's
appearance without putting yourself at risk.
β οΈ Do not cut the wound, suck the venom, apply ice, or use a
tourniquet.
π§ͺ
Chemical Ingestion
Call poison control with the name of the chemical. Do not induce
vomiting for acid, alkali or corrosive chemicals. Rinse mouth with
water. For skin contact, remove clothing and rinse skin with large
amounts of water for 20 minutes.
β οΈ Vomiting corrosive chemicals causes additional burns to the
throat and oesophagus.
πΏ
Pesticide / Insecticide Exposure
Move the person to fresh air immediately. Remove contaminated
clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. For eye
exposure, rinse continuously with clean water for 15β20 minutes.
Call poison control and go to A&E.
β οΈ Organophosphate poisoning (common farm pesticides) requires
immediate antidote β do not delay going to hospital.
π½οΈ
Food Poisoning
For mild cases, encourage fluid intake to prevent dehydration. For
severe symptoms β blood in vomit or stool, difficulty breathing,
paralysis, or symptoms in children β call 112 and go to A&E
immediately.
β οΈ Botulism from improperly preserved food is life-threatening.
Seek emergency care for any muscle paralysis after eating.
βοΈ
Gas / Carbon Monoxide
Get everyone out of the building immediately β do not stop to
investigate. Call the fire service on 193. Do not re-enter the
building. Go to A&E if anyone has headache, dizziness, confusion,
or nausea after exposure.
β οΈ Carbon monoxide is odourless β symptoms can be mistaken for
flu. Always suspect CO if multiple people feel unwell in the same
enclosed space.
STEP 01
Stay calm and assess
Take a breath before acting. Assess the scene for danger β
do not put yourself in danger to help someone
else. Identify what has happened, how many people are affected,
and whether the scene is safe to approach.
STEP 02
Call for help first
Call 112 before beginning first aid wherever
possible. Give your exact location (street name, nearest
landmark), what happened, how many people are affected, and the
condition of the most seriously injured person. Stay on the line.
STEP 03
Know your location
Emergency responders in Akwa Ibom need a precise location. Know
the nearest street name, junction, or landmark to where you are.
On your phone, open Maps and share your GPS coordinates with the
emergency operator if possible.
STEP 04
Give basic first aid
Apply only the first aid you are confident doing. Untrained
intervention can sometimes cause more harm. The most universal
actions β keeping someone still, stopping bleeding with pressure,
and keeping the airway clear β are almost always beneficial.
STEP 05
Do not move the person
Unless they are in immediate danger (e.g. from fire, traffic, or
rising water), do not move a casualty. Moving
someone with a spinal or neck injury incorrectly can cause
permanent paralysis. Wait for trained responders.
STEP 06
Keep records
Note the time symptoms or the incident began. Note any medications
the person takes if known. Note any changes in condition while
waiting for help. This information is critical for emergency
doctors and significantly improves treatment decisions.
